Description: Obsessed priest tries forcibly to expel demons from the bodies of their lustful congregation. He sees one way to save them from a sinful obsession – is to kill them …
This is a cruel film with a cruel message. Even though it all sounds quite far-fetched, the film posesses a strange sense of realism. “The Sadist of Notre Dame” makes up in cruelty what it lacks in budget possibilities. There are quite a few sequences that contain severe acts of torture and mutilation, inferred with the most perverted sexual undertones. Franco at his best, in other words
One of Jess Franco’s major films. Rather than play a cameo role as he often did, he took the central part of a defrocked priest who goes on a killing spree to rid the world of evil. Franco’s attack on the Catholic Church, made by a film maker who, along with Luis Bunuel, were once labelled by the Vatican as “the most dangerous filmmakers in the world” This is the most complete version of the film. In fact the film exists in many different forms and was remade as The Ripper of Notre Dame in 1979, using much of the same footage.
